From day one Mr. Toadstool stated he wasn’t going to wear a tux. Despite his mom’s insistence on it being the fancy way to go and how cute he’ll look, Mr. Toadstool refused to (and I quote) “look like a penguin”. The thing is we all thought this was a tux:
After my research we realized that’s a tailcoat, traditionally part of a white tie outfit.
Mr. Toadstool’s request was to wear black, he doesn’t like blue suits and apparently he thinks grey’s not formal enough. My request was for him to wear a waistcoat (or vest, but I think waistcoat sounds fancier) and to wear a tie that somehow matched our wedding colors, luckily he obliged.
Since there’s a chance Mr. Toadstool won’t wear a tux until who-knows-when, he decided he’s going to rent it. So finally, this past Saturday, we visited the two places that rent men’s formal wear in town (yep just two).
First we hit the affordable option; it is a fairly new business, so I hadn’t heard anything from them other than their own publicity. It was… good. We did find a tux Mr. Toadstool liked but their customer service was less than perfect, they were distracted and absent, and although I know it was the try-on sample the shirt the gave him was ripped and button-less and the jacket looked really old.
They measured Mr. T and took his contact info in case we decided to hire them. And we left telling them we might come back.
Next we hit the fancy option, a business that has been in town for a while and has a good reputation accompanied by high prices rumors. We were greeted by a very nice girl, who showed us a catalog and started pulling things for Mr. T to try. We asked her for a tie and vest that was any color between ivory and brown, unfortunately they only carry white and ivory and although I was expecting something more “latte” looking he really liked the look of the ivory tie.
Mr. T picked a black, one-button tux with an ivory waistcoat and matching cravat tie and, hive, my heart jumped when I saw him wearing that. Now I’m thinking there’s no way I’m going to be able to hold back tears on our first look.
Next thing I know he’s already paying for his rental, which ended up being just the same price as the other place, but looked better quality. They even offer a 10% discount to whoever wants to rent an outfit for our wedding, just by mentioning it’s for the Toadstool wedding. The only thing left to do is to pick the tux the day before the wedding.
A part of me was expecting Mr. Toadstool to say something along the lines of “If I can’t see your dress you can’t see what I’m wearing”, so I was very happy he invited me to come with him and even make requests. The control-freak bride is happy.
Did you/are you having a say on your groom’s outfit? Did he/is he keeping it from you?
*The place is called D’Paul, Obregon location, but they’re all over Mexico.
